I am a fanatic for stripes on walls. They are perfect for creating loads of impact on a not-so-large budget. And the options are endless: horizontal or vertical, thick or thin, one color or multi, symmetrical or varied. Lots to think about!
The most difficult part of painting stripes is the prepping, measuring, and leveling to create those perfect lines. And I should know. About a year ago, I convinced my boyfriend to paint our laundry room black and white horizontal stripes. He was actually quite into it .... until we got down and dirty. It was tedious to say the least, but once we got the hang of it, and developed a system (two people are better than one), it went pretty well. Here are a few of our tips:
Tip 1: Your floors are not always level.
Tip 2: Don't use your floors as the point of level reference or you will only enhance the fact that they aren't level. If your floors slope down, so will your stripes. Make sense? Instead, use a leveler all along the way to ensure each stripe is level. The space between each stripe may very just little bit, but won't be noticeable by the naked eye.
Tip 3: Start at the corner that is the most disguised (ex. behind a door).
Tip 4: Your stripes need to meet back up at this corner - it's more difficult than you think: the bigger the room, the more room for error. Throughout the project, keep measuring each strip from the floor or ceiling to keep yourself on track.
Tip 5: You will need lots of tape. Get the GREEN painters tape (not blue).
If you follow these tips, and have lots of patience, you too will get those perfect painted stripes!
